Although I had seriously considered applying to medical school while serving in the Marine Corps nearly a decade earlier, the timing wasn’t quite right. After that, I wound up in Houston as a brand-new astronaut. As I was floating hundreds of miles above Earth, an idea began to take hold. If I returned from the flight and pursued the life of a physician, I now could use my talents to help others I couldn’t even see as they lived out their lives on the small blue planet that appeared so beautiful below through the space shuttle window.
Being an astronaut sounded more exciting than what I was doing right then, and I had a commitment of four more years in the Marines as a “payback” for graduate school, so I figured almost on the spot that I would give it a shot. Did I think I had a serious chance? No, not really, because I was sure there would be hundreds of more-qualified Marines who would want to throw their names in the hat. The odds, though, weren’t going to stop me. It was almost like a game — I probably wasn’t going to make the cut, but just how far could I get?
Me? I felt incredibly blessed just to be in the astronaut office — how could I possibly quibble over when I got selected to a crew? Dave was a really talented individual, and I thought that he was very deserving to be the first from our group to fly. That’s not to say that I wasn’t looking forward to my own assignment, because that most definitely wasn’t the case. I would show up to a public appearance and try to explain that while I was an astronaut, I hadn’t yet flown. Folks would show up expecting to meet a famous space shuttle astronaut like Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, but instead, they got me.
