Read e-book online Biomimetics for Architecture & Design: Nature - Analogies - PDF

This ebook offers the readers with a well timed consultant to the appliance of biomimetic rules in structure and engineering layout. because of a mixed attempt by means of across the world well-known experts, the biologist Werner Nachtigall and the architect Göran Pohl, the publication describes the rules that are used to match nature and know-how, and whilst it provides designated causes and examples exhibiting how biology can be utilized as a resource of suggestion and “translated” in development and architectural options (biomimicry).

Extra info for Fiber Optic Lighting: A Guide for Specifiers, 2nd Edition

Example text

Many books tend to offer little on the topic of fiber optics and do not offer the reader concrete assistance in relating what information is presented to current lighting design possibilities. Some books will also introduce technical terms related to fiber optics without defining them in the context of lighting design. The most updated lighting handbooks often provide an explanation related to total internal reflection (the term used to describe how light is transmitted along the length of a fiber), but little else on the subject of fiber optics.

This chapter introduces examples of how light can be lost before it reaches the illuminated environment. In Chapter 5, some varying characteristics related to glass and plastic fiber are presented. Information included in this chapter provides the designer with certain issues that may need to be addressed when considering a particular fiber optic system. In Chapter 6, some of the accessories available for fiber optic lighting systems are presented. Equipment addressed in Page xvii this section should be viewed as a representation of the numerous accessories and fixtures that are currently available to the designer.

Figure 2-13 illustrates a fiber optic system utilizing end-emitting fibers. End-emitting fibers are made from glass or plastic and generally never exceed 60 feet in length. All fibers possess characteristics that diminish and alter light as it travels through them. Therefore, the exact length of an end-emitting fiber will be determined by the desired illumination levels and quality of light that is required at the illuminated area. Figure 2-14 illustrates a large core plastic end-emitting fiber.
