Apple encourages us to think more widely in the ways in which we can connect activist, critical pedagogies back to the communities in which we operate and whom we claim to serve, and this is what this project has attempted to do (2005:105). It takes as its central belief the certainty that when educationalists ask our clients/ students/collaborators what they need to thrive more fully in schools, we will be on our way to reconstructing pedagogical relationships for the twenty-first century, in ways that recognise that dominant ways of knowing need changing.

Alternative Spaces Cross-Marked’s co-participants are Sudanese-Australian young women aged 18–25 from Melbourne, Australia. All have arrived since 2004 with refugee backgrounds, and as a group are critically under-researched (Cassity and Gow 2006). One of the aims of these films was the creation of an alternative space in which these young women may share with other young people, educationalists and the general public crucial knowledges acquired in their first 5 years of residency in the country.

Working with refugee-background young women in the Sudanese community – like working with anyone – means establishing relationships first and building a project second, an approach which I now understand as central to its ethnocinematic methodology. This relationship of trust is familiar to any documentary filmmaker, ethnographer, teacher or community artist. It has been well documented by qualitative researchers (Ellis 2004; 2007; 14 1 Introduction Denzin 2003; Tillmann-Healy 2003) as a ‘call to enter the lived experience of those I study’ (Ceglowski 2000:88).
