Questions Do you believe that the results of technical studies are enough to appease fear? Is it smart to expedite a project by complying exclusively with the law, regardless of stakeholders’ expectations? Is it ethical? " Today, it seems as if Friedman’s assertion is no longer generally accepted as it was in 1970. Instead, conforming to social values is the moral imperative that legitimizes entrepreneurship. It is now recognized that social expectations may not be exclusively related to legal compliance, and that meeting society’s expectations for conscientious and proper behavior is the project’s ethical responsibility.
Regarding projects and the law, there are two (meta-theoretical) perspectives. The rational materialist perspective sees projects as wealth maximizers and the law as a system of incentives and penalties. The cultural normative perspective sees projects as cultural rule followers and the law as a system of moral principles, roles, and symbols. “The difference between legal (letter) and moral (spirit) obligations, which at some point overlap in a gray zone, is that while the former are existing (legal) and compliance driven, the latter are emerging (moral) and accountability driven” (Lopez, 2015, p.
37). In the majority of these ethical wrongdoing situations, the inability to discern ethical behavior from outward appearances was evident, as it was difficult to distinguish who was ethical and who was not. Ethics must be cardinal to the overall management of any project, instead of merely a peripheral subject. Substantial widespread interest in ethics by the general public is demonstrated by the fierce outcry opposing the almost daily sequence of scandals. Some basic principles that could form the cornerstone of project ethics include honesty, good faith, transparency, and averting conflicts of interest.
