The length of the terminal hair is determined by the duration of the anagen growth phase.

It is organized into two portions: 1. The upper papillary dermis, which hugs the epidermis and is made up of loosely arranged collagen fibers; and 2. The reticular dermis, which makes up almost the entire thickness of the dermis. The connective tissue matrix of the reticular dermis is composed of interwoven bundles of densely packed helical collagen fibrils surrounded by elastic fibers. Type I collagen makes up 80–90% of dermal collagen. The matrix also contains glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and glycosaminoglycans that form the water binding ground substance of the dermis.
