For example, the average age of leaving school for Asians was 17 years 1 month, compared with 16 years and 7 months for whites. Despite the stereotypical perception that many Asian girls are forced to leave school early, no gender differences were found. If anything, in some recent interviews conducted by the author, some young Asian people were claiming that Asian girls stay at school longer than boys. One Asian girl explained this: It is a great advantage for Asian girls to stay at school longer because they get a chance to improve their lot academically.
I actually saw it, it was definite discrimination, she was doing nothing different from all of us. We also wanted to know whether young people experience discrimination from other pupils and what form it takes. Almost 50 per cent of young Asians claimed to have experienced discrimination from other pupils. This included name calling (27 per cent), fighting (12 per cent), verbal abuse and swearing (13 per cent), teasing, bullying and other forms (14 per cent). One Asian young person explained her personal experience: ‘got jumped by skinheads—teachers never did anything’.
