A side porch was used for laundry and other chores during warm weather. The house, barns, and outbuildings were set back about a quarter of a mile or so from the gravel road. I learned at an early age to hold my own in a man’s world (good training for my later careers). We often played softball or baseball in the front yard, using the trees or bushes as bases and staying well away from the house in order to avoid hitting the ball into the windows. We knew that breaking a window definitely would not be a good idea. During one game, I stepped a little too close to the batter in my role as catcher and took a bat hit in the center of my forehead. Mother heard the crack from inside the house and came running when she heard me howling.
